Lithium Battery Thermal Management: Cooling and Heating Systems

Temperature Impact on Performance

Lithium battery performance and longevity depend heavily on operating temperature. Optimal performance occurs between 20-40°C, with capacity and power decreasing at low temperatures while degradation accelerates at high temperatures. Thermal management maintains batteries within optimal ranges.

High-power applications generate substantial internal heat during discharge. Without cooling, cell temperatures rise, accelerating degradation and potentially triggering protective shutdowns. Active cooling systems maintain safe operating temperatures during demanding use.

Heating and Cooling Methods

Liquid cooling circulates coolant through channels within the battery pack, providing efficient heat removal for high-power applications. Air cooling uses fans and ducting for simpler, lower-cost thermal management. Phase-change materials absorb heat during transient peak loads.

Cold climate applications require heating systems to maintain minimum operating temperatures. Battery heaters powered by the pack itself or external sources ensure cold-weather performance and prevent lithium plating during charging at low temperatures.
